  1. It’s interesting that the slabs don’t seem to last more ~300MY. That’s about the upper limit of oldest oceanic crust. Is it a coincidence or is there more to it?

    • I think it is a coincidence. In general, because slabs thicken during their descent, it will take more time for slabs to thermally assimilate back into the mantle than it takes time for them to heat up. The average age of subducting lithosphere is probably 60 Myr or so (haven’t checked), and if they would thicken by a factor 2, it will roughly take 4 times as long to assimilate. I would guess that that explains how far back mantle memory of sudbuction goes – I’m sure this can be quantitatively substantiated, but I’m not sure anybody did. Nice research project 🙂
